Advanced Diagnostic Imaging

Veterinary Imaging Specialists

Queensland Veterinary Specialists offer state of the art advanced imaging modalities that allow us to gain further information in regards to your pet’s health.

Across our hospitals, we have two veterinary radiographers and a specialist veterinary radiologist who perform and review many of our imaging procedures. Most of our CT and MRI scans are interpreted by a specialist veterinary radiologist. Alternatively, the scan may be interpreted by a specialist or registrar in internal medicine or surgery.

We offer a wide range of imaging services

Digital Radiography

Our advanced digital x-ray units produce fast, high quality digital images. Digital radiography is available at both our Stafford and North Lakes hospitals.

Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography offers a non-invasive examination of internal organs. We have multiple, state of the art ultrasound units available at both our Stafford and North Lakes hospitals.

Computed Tomography (CT)

Our Stafford and North Lakes facilities both have Siemens Multislice CT Scanners that allow quick, detailed scans to help diagnose a variety of internal abnormalities. CT uses x-ray technology to rapidly produce very thin slice cross-sectional images. Our CT Scanners enable multi-planar image reconstructions as well as 3D images of all body parts to aid in accurate diagnoses.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI is a non-invasive modality that uses very strong magnetic fields and radiofrequency waves to produce cross-sectional imaging of internal structures in different planes. We have a Siemens Magnetom Sempra 1.5T MRI installed at our Stafford hospital. This machine is the same as that which is used for imaging in people, ensuring the best possible images of our patients. The MRI machine is run by our two radiographers who have a combined 50 years in clinical human imaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would my pet require diagnostic imaging?

Advanced diagnostic imaging includes CT and MRI scans. Although a lot of information can be obtained from x-ray and ultrasound, sometimes patients present with symptoms that require more detailed imaging to accurately diagnose their condition. In this instance, CT or MRI may be recommended by the attending clinician.

Advanced diagnostic imaging may be used to:

  • Diagnose and monitor different diseases such as tumours or infections
  • Identify internal injuries after a traumatic accident
  • Identify reasons for lameness or pain
  • Aid in planning prior to a surgical procedure
  • Identify abnormal anatomy
  • Help guide veterinarians performing biopsies
  • Diagnose soft tissue abnormalities (ligaments, nerves etc)
  • Visualise blood vessels
  • Assess the spinal cord and discs
Any part of the patient’s body can be scanned using advanced imaging and common areas include the head, thorax, abdomen, spine, elbows and stifles. Following a review of your pet’s medical history and a physical examination, our clinicians will work with you in a discussion on the best diagnostic tests to reach a diagnosis and then implement a treatment plan for your pet.
