Specialist Veterinary Surgery

Leading Specialist Veterinary
Surgeons in Queensland

Our team of experienced surgeons are dedicated to providing outstanding care for your pet.

Surgeons at QVS perform a range of soft tissue, cancer and orthopaedic procedures, working closely with other specialists to ensure we provide excellent patient care.  We work closely with our anaesthesia department (anaesthesia veterinary specialist and technicians) to ensure the highest level of anaesthetic safety and pain management and always strive for the very best outcomes for the patients entrusted to our care.

When you bring your pet to QVS for surgery, we begin with a consultation to review their medical history and any previous diagnostic tests. We then perform a thorough physical examination, which may include a detailed orthopaedic or neurological assessment, to help guide the best treatment plan for your pet.

Additional testing is often then required to refine the treatment plan. This commonly involves working together with our diagnostic imaging team to perform further radiographs (x-rays), or potentially ultrasound, CT or MRI scans as well as 3D printing and fluoroscopy. These diagnostic tools are often crucial in reaching a diagnosis and surgical planning in certain complex cases.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

We routinely perform minimally invasive surgery where applicable. This involves performing surgery through small ‘keyhole’ incisions utilising small telescopic cameras for visual guidance. The types of minamally invasive surgery include laparoscopy (abdominal), arthroscopy (joint) and thoracoscopy (chest).

This allows your pet to have surgery with smaller incisions, less pain, lower infection risk and quicker recovery.

QVS surgeons were among the first veterinary surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery in Australia. In fact, Dr David Burgess performed the first laparoscopic ovariectomy in Australia.

Many traumatic problems (fractured bones and joints) can be treated with the aid of intra-operative imaging (fluoroscopy) and minimally invasive techniques in order to restore joint function and eliminate pain with minimal intra-operative discomfort.

Experts in Veterinary Surgery

We have a team of specialists and registrars (ECVS residency trained), residents, interns and an expert team of surgical technicians and nurses. We are supported by specialist anaesthesia, internal medicine and critical care teams to ensure the very best care for your pet.

Our specialists are recognised by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council and have Diplomate of Fellowship status (the highest tier of clinical recognition) with the Australian, European and American surgical boards.

Why might my pet see the surgery team?
